Horizons at Green Farms Academy
Inspiring Minds, Building Community, Transforming Lives
Horizons at Greens Farms Academy (GFA) helps underserved students from Bridgeport develop strong academic, social and emotional skills, habits of mind and the resilience to succeed in school and pursue a meaningful, choice-filled life.
In partnership with GFA, PreK-8 students attend a six-week summer program of small classes led by professional, nurturing teachers. Students engage with an individualized curriculum emphasizing reading, writing and math. Enrichment activities, including swimming and music, expose students to new opportunities. During the school year, Saturday Academy provides academic and social continuity. Horizons assists its high school and college students through one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, and college counseling.
Our PreK-8 Program starts students at a young age so they build the literacy and foundational skills critical to succeeding in school. PreK-8 programming not only prevents summer learning loss, a root cause of the achievement gap, it builds academic skill and a love of learning. In our nurturing environment of high expectations, our students build confidence, self-esteem, and a proud sense of belonging in our community.
To solidify and build on the gains of the PreK-8 years, Horizons at GFA supports its high school students with intensive, individualized academic and personal support during the school year. Each student is paired with an academic coach who acts as their mentor, teacher, counselor and advocate during the critical and sometimes perilous high school years. Our High School Program is a learning environment focusing on academic achievement and personal growth to prepare students to graduate from both high school and college.
Read MoreOver two-thirds of Horizons at GFA high school graduates are first-generation college students. Due to academic gaps, cultural differences and financial obstacles, the post-secondary completion rate of first-generation students is as low as 11%. To tackle this issue, in 2016 a systematic college support program was piloted with the goal of making sure our students not only get into college, but also complete it.
Our college success program assists Horizons at GFA students entering and currently in college with the transition to the post-secondary environment, as well as mentoring to assure degree completion and career readiness so they can attain a "meaningful, choice-filled life."

Thank you to the GFA PreK-12 community for their generosity in donating hundreds upon hundreds of books to this event, and a very special thank you to GFA’s Horizons Club members for their efforts in collecting, leveling, and organizing the books! All students attending the event were able to pick out books at their reading level to take home, such wonderful gifts! Go to Instagram or our Facebook page to see pics!
